Intro to Traffic Skills now twice monthly; free to all members
In 2009, after five years of presenting the League of American Bicyclists' 9-hour, Traffic Skills 101 (formerly "Road 1" and, originally, "Effective Cycling") course to some very dedicated -- but relatively few -- cyclists, we adapted that curriculum into a short seminar that could be offered for free to people who bought bikes from us, and held before our popular Saturday Social ride. Without the on-road or written tests, this class doesn't award the Traffic Skills 101 certificate, but still covers the same important topics, and it's a lot easier for people to fit into their schedules.
Because the Traffic Skills Intro has proven so effective at getting so many more people comfortable riding in traffic, this year we are adding a second Saturday morning time; and, with the increased commitment to traffic safety we made after the death of Sylvia Bingham, we are making this course free to current OCBC members, and a membership requirement, in the same way that our maintenance classes are required for shop use. We will also offer an online bike safety quiz to satisfy this requirement: we'd appreciate your feedback on the DRAFT quiz here.
Intro to Traffic Skills is also free for anyone from now through May who commits to leading at least two rides with any group's posted event during Clelveland Bicycle Week.
Pre-registration for Intro to Traffic Skills is required by 5pm the Wednesday before class, and is limited to 10 students. Private classes can also be arranged at OCBC, or elsewhere. Please call, visit, or email education@OhioCityCycles.org for more information.
