The 19th annual Marmots’ Meander will go ahead this Sunday, 1/23, just a month or so behind the traditional date. Since there was no snow on the Sunday before Groundhog Day this year, we saw no point riding around in the warm, grey Cleveland winter weather; but now that the local climate is imitating the “seasonal” weather that some of us grew up with around here, we’re going sledding!
Please join us, either at OCBC to ride to (and from!) the sledding hill(s); or, if you are not up for riding and sledding, you can meet us (we’ll get there around 1pm) at W 11th St and Clark Ave, where there is free car parking (and the A Christmas Story House) right nearby.
If you are up for a winter ride, the conditions are near perfect! We’ll meet at OCBC after 11am and leave by noon, and will be back at OCBC by 3pm at the latest. This event is free (donations are, as always, appreciated), but please register above so we can plan for enough refreshments and ride leaders for a sufficiently socially-distanced ride.
This year we’ll ride to the Clark Avenue Towpath trailhead at W 11th St and Clark Ave, via clear-but-salty W 14th St through Tremont, and return via the ploughed-but-snowy towpath trail; or via nearby, clear-but-really-salty, Quigley Ave & W 3rd St, just below Tremont bluff. Both options (or driving and walking from Tremont) will allow for a scenic stop at “Mt. Schmutzhaufen” (pictured here).
The route is about 7 mi. total, unsupported, except for hot cocoa and cider at the sledding hill(s). Helmets and masks are required (both available at the start). Bring any sleds, skis or snowboards you can carry, or borrow one of ours. Bike-washing equipment and work stands for drying and re-lubing will be available on OCBC’s semi-heated dock after the ride.
The ride is free, but please register above to ensure enough refreshments!
